...because Kassie and Eli are going to join the Church at the end of this season! Yay!!

*2*
Tina from Vita Consecrata is on her way to a discernment weekend with an religious sister order in Tennessee! I'm so happy for her! Send your prayers her way. I know this week was slow for her and I know she'll have a fulfilling and FUN weekend!

The ladies of Bright Maidens are truly humbled and appreciative for your attention to our first posts in the Lenten series. If you haven't seen them yet this is Julie's, this is Trista's, and this is mine.

The NC Register posted a link to each of our posts, as did the Pulp.it. Stacy Trasancos posted excerpts and links to our posts, as well! We're very humbled!

Next week's topic is CONTRACEPTION so please come back on Tuesday and stir the pot with us. Then comes dating, patron saints, our issue(s) with the Church, saving sex for marriage, and finally, a surprise post!!

Got writer's block? Get some brain Drain-O.
(I don't own the rights)
If Pandora, a neurologist and a psychologist (walk into a bar... no, wrong line) sat down together with some ice cream sundaes, this would be the result. That may be how this was born, who knows? All I know is, I'm running low on songs that I won't skip on "shuffle" and this refreshes my musical palate.

A friend of mine who is a devout and practicing Catholic at Harvard University (you thought such people didn't exist, didn't you?) sent me this poem by T.S. Eliot, "Ash Wednesday." He instructed me to "read it, several times."

So I say to you: read it and read it again.

I've gotten a few comments on this blog, through email, and in person that concern me...
This picture is a lie.

I'm sorry to report that I did not actually swim in the Beijing Olympics. But in the same vein, I'm happy to say that my Mac did such a good job superimposing the picture of the pool that I fooled you all! Muhahaha...

At one point, the Beijing Olympics were my goal. I can't say I got very close, but I aimed for them.

Spring is coming.

(I don't own the rights)
As a spring cleaning goal and a Lenten goal, I'm going to take a look-see at these prayers, transcribed in English and Latin.
In nomine Patris
et Filii
et Spiritus Sancti. Amen

I lied and haven't gotten ready for bed yet (whoops).

Let me join my voice with yours and say a very sincere thanks to all the people/websites you listed who linked to the Bright Maidens posts! I'm excited for our posts on contraception.

You are so sweet! Thank you for the prayers and prayer request! I'm sitting at the airport praying that I'm at the right terminal right now!

I'm excited about the contraception talk...though I should warn you, I do have views that are slightly different than some Catholics. But it should make for good dialogue, right?

Trista, you're funny!

Tina- I know you won't see this, but BLESSINGS to you on your trip!

Jackie- Ooooo controversy, I like it! I'm excited to see what you say. We're trying to approach the topic in a new way and we'll all have our own way of writing about it.

Great stuff! So ready for your contraception topic! I've got things to say about that! :)

You are so funny! I love the Olympic pictures. Leila had a great post today on NFP, since you are getting ready to write your contraception posts. It links to other good posts too.

YAY KASSIE AND ELI!

And the Bright Maiden series... which reminds me, something else "to do" this weekend...

I'd like to learn those prayers in Latin. Great post!

Ugh. I totally comment on blogger blogs, then forget to do the ID code and close the page. So I'm guessing that's why my comment from earlier isn't up here. That, or you deleted it ;-)

I won't leave you in suspense...basically, I have mixed feelings. I am on BC for my endometriosis/IC. But I wish I wasn't cause I want the 'natural' part of NFP. That being said, I disagree with how the Church arrived at the decision to not approve hormonal BC. Basically, an exploratory committee was formed to investigate this issue and they found that hormonal BC was OK. But then the Pope, who formed the committee, decided otherwise. So it seems to me that the philosophers and theologians of the time were OK with it, but now we've reworked our theology and philosophy to be not OK with it. So its just tough for me to see it as wrong since most people (except the Pope) thought it was right. Also, I think that one can use contraception and still be open to life. I mean, my husband and I definitely are. Sure, I have to be on it for medical reasons, but if we get pregnant on the pill (like my mom did with my little sister), we are 100% okay with that! So I don't think that using BC means that you are automatically not open to life. I think there are more degrees of openness rather than either being completely open or closed to it.
Also, the idea that sex is unitive and procreative is kinda new in Christian philosophy. It used to be viewed as solely procreative, and that was the philosophy around which the anti-contraceptive mentality was developed. Originally, the rhythm method was not even allowed!
So I think I just see the Catholic view point on BC and sex as something that is constantly evolving, and not as cut and dry as we like to make it out to be. (I've had people basically tell me I'm committing mortal sins by not flying all over the country trying every single last option before ever using BC, and even if nothing else works, I should just offer up my excrutiating and debilitating pain to God).
I do love the teaching in TOB, respect it, and even defend it, but I think I have different ideas about how it could be implemented. I wouldn't be surprised if one day the Church changes its position on hormonal birth control, but at the same time, I'm willing to accept the fact I could also be wrong.
Phew. Sorry to leave a book on your blog! I should have something about this on my blog. A little "Yes, I am Catholic but here is why you haven't heard me mention NFP yet!" post. I'm really excited to hear your thoughts!

OH I didn't delete it, Jackie! This is the first time I saw this!

Interesting... you're in a different category than most BC users. That being said, you can be "open to life" as you are with your husband because you're happy to welcome a child as a result. However, those who are on BC for the purpose of controlling when they conceive cannot say the same. They can say they'd keep the baby and they'd be happy to have the baby, but if they're on birth control, they are not open to life. They are open to accidents.

Rather than responding with a book ;), I think Leila's article on NFP from yesterday is an excellent explanation. She writes, "Remember, choosing to abstain from sex is not a sin. However, choosing to take the pleasure of sex while willfully disconnecting it from its full meaning is a sin."

Wow, a mention from NC Register?? That makes you practically FAMOUS in the Catholic blogosphere!

Looking forward to the rest of the posts... sounds like the topic for next week is going to be a scorcher! I'll wait to see what you all have in store... but I do have to chime in that 1) Yes, there was a committee formed, yes, they thought that BC was ok, and yes, the Pope declared otherwise... and what stemmed from that was Humanae Vitae by Pope Paul VI... EPIC! and 2) Along with being a contraceptive, hormonal BC can also act as an abortifacient... it's supposedly even on the drug label, although I have never personally seen it so I cannot be sure.

I have been so absent from blog-world lately... so much busy going on during this Lenten time of slowing down... but I am glad to say that I will have time to watch for your posts each week! Very excited!

Hi Elizabeth! Great site!

I'm looking forward to reading some of next week's posts. They do look like scorchers!

Regarding your upcoming post on contraception, in the event you haven't read this article, it might be helpful. Good stuff (Joel and I have a testimony regarding NaPro and the Pope Paul VI Institute)
